Gordon R. Folsom

Of Waukesha, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 83. He was born in South Berwick, Maine on September 12, 1924 the son of Raymond and Louise (nee: Hasty) Folsom. He married Ellen (nee: Pinkham) on June 12, 1948. Dr. Folsom was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and held a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He had been the Mary Robertson Williams Professor of English at Carroll College, where he joined the faculty in 1953. He was Emeritus Professor of English at the time of his death. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named Dr. Folsom Wisconsin Professor of the Year in 1989 in a program recognizing the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Ellen, along with his daughters: Betsey Folsom of Milwaukee and Susan (Mark) Berman of Kingston, Rhode Island. His sister Ruth Howarth of South Berwick, Maine, he was the brother of the late Donald C. Folsom and he will be missed by his sister-in-law, Elaine Folsom of North Berwick, Maine. Other relatives and many friends, also survive him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 11:00AM at the Humphrey Memorial Chapel at Carroll College 238 N. East Ave., Waukesha Wisconsin In lieu of flowers, a fund in Dr. Folsom's name is being set up for the English Department at Carroll College.
