Allen “Al” Lyle Link passed on November 19, 2024 at Zilber Hospice in Wauwatosa. His wife , children and grandchildren were by his side.
Allen was born in Waukesha on August 29, 1943, the son of Lyle and Marion (Ellarson) Link.
He spent his childhood on Woods Road and attended Saylesville School, a one room classroom through 8th grade. He graduated from Waukesha South High School in 1961. Al attended Knox College until he entered the U.S. Navy in 1963. He served aboard the U.S.S. Samuel Moore as an electronics technician serving his country during the Viet Nam War.
Al is survived by his wife, Anne, his son, Brian (Roxanne), his daughter Sarah and grandchildren Henry, Louis, Eliza and Silas all of whom he loved dearly. He was the proud brother of 7 sisters Jeanne (David), Betsy, Susan, Sally (Mike), Nancy, Carolyn and Leslie (Rick). Survivors also include brothers-in-law, sisters-in law, many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Al” and many dear friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew Nathan and his brother-in-law Lowell.
After serving in the Navy Al, Anne and family returned to Waukesha in 1967 where Al joined his father Lyle in the family business, Link Builders. Al assumed leadership of the company and remained President of Link Associates until his retirement.
In addition to commercial building Al and his dad built 3 custom trawler yachts. One remains in the family and has been refurbished by Al and his son, Brian. The “Amiga” is a family treasure and has been a source of joy to Al for many years.
A true son of Waukesha, Al shared his many talents with his community. He was a member of the noon Rotary Club for many years and served as president. He was passionate about the Fox River Walk and was instrumental in its development. He served on the board of the United Way in Waukesha County and as a campaign chairman. Among the many boards Al served on were: Waukesha Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Waukesha Chamber of Commerce. In 1992 Al was honored by the Waukesha Chamber of Commerce as the Small Business Person of the Year. A member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Al was active as a church council member and youth advisor.
Al enjoyed life to the fullest as he hunted “at the farm” with his hunting buddies, downhill skied, and set the auto-pilot on his beloved Amiga for one more adventure. In his retirement he taught himself to turn wooden bowls. His ability to see a beautiful bowl in a piece of wood was pure pleasure to him and to the many recipients of his work.
The family would like to extend heart felt gratitude for the compassionate care Al received from Froedtert’s Palliative Care Center and Zilber’s home and In-patient Hospice.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Legacy Fund or Waukesha County’s Alzheimer’s Association.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on January 4,2025 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 424 Hyde Park Avenue, Waukesha. Visitation will take place from 10:00-12:00 AM with a 12 PM service to follow.
