Bernadette “Peggy” T. Van Altena a longtime Waukesha resident passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the age of 92. She was born in Milwaukee on January 11, 1928 the daughter of Michael and Viola (nee Sulewski) Polega. She was a graduate of Riverside High School in Milwaukee. On June 26, 1948 she married Howard Van Altena in Milwaukee; he preceded her in death on August 23, 2000. Peggy was a devout Catholic and charter member of St. William Catholic Church where she served in the Christian Women and taught Christian Formation classes. She was a member of “The Club” for 74 years and enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Peggy loved to travel to Las Vegas and in recent years enjoyed participating in activities at her home, Cecelia Place in Pewaukee.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Judy (Wayne) Conrad of Waukesha, son John (Judy) Van Altena of Pewaukee, daughter-in-law Linda (Dale) Larson of Rockford, IL, her grandchildren, Carrie (Ron) Nellen of town of Delafield, Matthew (Britt) Conrad of Milton, GA, Alyssa and Carly Van Altena both of Pewaukee, Kimberly (Brian) Thiede of Rockford, IL and Paul Van Altena of Chicago and great-grandchildren, Will, Audrey, Grace and Miles Thiede, Cooper and Tess Conrad and Salvador Van Altena. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband Howard, she was preceded in death by her son Mark Van Altena in 1986 and her brothers and sisters, Daniel, Jill, Leona and Robert.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Cecelia Place and Legacy Hospice for their care and kindness provided to Peggy and her family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 10:00AM until 11:45AM at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd. in Waukesha followed by the 12:00 Noon funeral Mass. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials in Peggy’s name are appreciated to the American Heart Association, 1555 N. RiverCenter Dr. Suite 211, Milwaukee, WI 53212.
