WAUKESHA-Bette Ann Hanson, 78, of New Berlin, died Monday, September 25, 2006 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She was born in Waukesha on September 2, 1928 to Loyal M. Hanson, Sr. and Mae (Burrie-Kuhtz) Hanson. She was a 1946 graduate of Waukesha High School. She received her BA in psychology from UW-Madison in 1955 and her MS in education in 1967. In 1969 she was chosen by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to be Master Teacher at the Demonstration Project for Indian Schools in Tempe, AZ. She attended the University of Illinois-Urbana, where she earned a PhD in Early Childhood Education in 1979. During her teaching career, she taught at Brown Street School in Milwaukee, New Berlin Center School, Hawthorne School in Waukesha, UW-Milwaukee, where she was involved with curriculum and instruction, and UW-Stout as Program Director and Professor of Early Childhood Education. She retired from UW-Stout in 1996 and was named Professor Emeritus. She was a longtime member of the Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ in Waukesha. She is survived by her sisters Donna Mae Hanson of New Berlin, Nioleta Jean Hanson of Madison, Susan Kay (Dean) Wilcox of New Berlin, and Sandra Lea Hanson of Pillager, MN; and her brothers Loyal M. Hanson, Jr. of Fallbrook, CA, and Robert Charles (Karla) Hanson of Waukesha. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Barbara L. Hanson and her brothers Richard A. Hanson and Gary W. Hanson. Services for Bette will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Prairie Home Cemetery Chapel, 605 S. Prairie Avenue at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow.
