Burnell "Bub" C. Whitmore

August 12, 1928 — July 22, 2015

Burnell ‘Bub’ Whitmore of Genesee passed away peacefully at AngelsGrace Hospice on July 22, 2015. Bub was a lifelong resident of Genesee Village, born to Horace ‘Jinks’ and Alice (nee Smart) Whitmore in their family home on Walnut Street. Bub was the eldest child with three sisters, Mary (Richard) Savatski, Nancy (Donald) Stein, and Merle (Eldor ‘Bud’) Teske. In August of 1948, he was united in marriage to Alice Joyce ‘AJ’ Horn, at the Genesee Congregational UCC Church. Together they raised six boys; Daniel (Barbara), Timothy (Nancy), Joseph (Alice), Stephen, Benjamin, Andrew (Dawn), and a daughter Mary Beth (Michael) O’Neil in the house he and his father built next door to his parents. Bub attended Waukesha High School with the class of 1946 after high school he worked at Michael Yundt Co., Pett Milk, Fuller Brush Company, selling Real Estate, and retired from Waukesha Motor Co in 1990. For 25 years Bub enjoyed retirement with his wine making and gardening at home, along with hunting and fishing at the lakeside cottage on Potato Lake in Spooner, WI, which he helped Jinks build in 1962. The lake cottage provided much joy with generations of family and friends with whom he shared the area. Around 1986 (that’s the furthest back the official records go) Bub joined the Genesee Cemetery Association by serving on the Board of Directors; 24 of those years was as President, with his name being removed from service just last year. Even though Bub cherished the children and grandchildren, the true joy in recent years of life, was watching his great-grandchildren. He never could resist showing the photos from his wallet of his ‘whiffets’ and telling anyone with a willing ear to listen who they belonged to. Bub was extremely straight forward and would say whatever was on his mind. Despite his quirk-some personality and colorful use of language, Bub always was willing to help friends and family when needed and was very well-liked and will truly be missed by all.
Bub will be deeply missed by six of his children; 14 grandchildren, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ (Russ) Giese, John, Brian (Denise), Matt (Amy), Sarah (Brad) Larson, Bryn (Dale) Ratajczyk, Emma (Alan) Phillips, Shelly (Michael) Leister, Megan (Daniel) Sidwell, Katherine, Rebecca, Alica, Margaret, and Jamie; 13 great-grandchildren, Merian, William, Robert, Nathan, Rees, Elizabeth, John, Edward, Merritt, Camden, Jayden, Sarah, and Eleanore Mae. He is further survived by his sister Mary (Richard) Savatski, brother-in-law Donald Stein, Herbert (Arlene) Horn; sister-in-law Jeanette Horn; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alice; son Benjamin and sisters Nancy Stein and Merle Teske.
The family wishes to thank Anne Marie, Melissa and Monica for the loving, gifted and compassionate care they provided for Bub while he was at home. They came to know Bub’s personality and how to deal successfully with him. Bub in turn accepted them as part of his family and looked forward to the days they came as his caregivers. Sincere thanks and gratitude is also given to AngelsGrace Hospice for their warm care for Bub and his family during his final days.
