Charles “Charlie” J. Esser, of New Berlin, died on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the age of 89. He was born in Dousman on June 12, 1926 the son of Fred and Eleanor (nee Weyer) Esser. In his younger years, Charlie worked at Waukesha Beach with his family, enjoyed organizing Vaudeville Shows and worked as a gardener for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for the Wales Fire Department and served as a town supervisor for the Town of Genesee.
He met Rose Mary Weimer when she was 13, and they were married at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Eagle on April 19, 1952. Charlie was a lifelong farmer where he worked as a dairy farmer and raised beef cattle. In addition to being a farmer, he worked as a mechanic for the Waukesha County Highway department for many years. Charlie loved playing sheepshead, telling jokes, dancing with his wife, “accumulating” tractors, collecting Model A cars and wintering in Florida where he volunteered for the Florida State Parks. Most of all, Charlie loved his wife and he will always be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 63 years, Rose Mary Esser of New Berlin and their seven children, Linda (Joseph) Bartolotta of Waukesha, Carol (Eric) Eberhardy of Belleville, WI, Teresa (Martien) Bakens of Morro Bay, CA, Donna (Patrick) Maher of Richfield, Charlene (Michael) Remy of West Bend, Chuck Esser of Pewaukee and Ellen (Richard) Myers of Lake Bluff, IL. He was the dear grandfather of 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Mary Kawatski, Agnes Karrels and Annabelle Kelly along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Avenue, Waukesha. Father Howard Haase will preside. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the town of Genesee.
