Dorothy Bettinger, 91, passed away on March 12, 2016, in Wausau Wisconsin with her family by her side.
Dorothy was born on November 7, 1924 in Mukwonago, Wisconsin to Byron and Frances (Love) Hardaker. She graduated from Mukwonago High School and the Milwaukee Business Institute. On July 16, 1949, she married Bernard Bettinger, who preceded her in death in 1989.
Along with her husband, Dorothy was a part of the Town of Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, serving as one of the dispatchers for over 18 years. During the 1970’s, she became Waukesha County’s first State Licensed female EMT while still volunteering for the Fire Department. She was a lifetime member of the Waukesha First Congregational/UCC Church, giving countless hours of service. She also donated decades of hours volunteering for the Waukesha Food Pantry and Hope Center of Waukesha. While doing all of this, she also found time to travel to at least a dozen countries.
She is survived by her children Betsy (Larry) Schaefer of Tomahawk and Brian (Paula) Bettinger of Marshfield; grandchildren Shannon (Kirk) Keck of Minocqua, Becky (Mark) Becker of Merrill, Amanda Olds of Schofield, Brandon Bettinger of Sun Prairie, Kaleigh Bettinger and Alexis Bettinger of Marshfield and great grandchildren Alicia, Keesha, Ashley, Danny and Zachary. She was further survived by her sisters: Betty of Indiana, Bea of Toronto, Ontario and Joyce of Nevada.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 E. Broadway Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. Reverend Brittany Barber will preside. Interment will be at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Mukwonago. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the First Congregational UCC.
