Elizabeth "Betty" M. Newman

April 26, 1921 — October 14, 2018

Betty M. Newman, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Legacy Assisted Living in Pewaukee. Betty was born Elizabeth May Wheeler on April 26, 1921 to Harry and Aurelia Wheeler of Waukesha. She attended grade and high school in Waukesha and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waukesha and St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee all her life. She had one younger sister Lillian, now deceased. Following school, she attended the Milwaukee School of Beauty Design and on September 21, 1940 she married Woodrow P. Newman of Elkhorn, WI. Together they had four children Jean, Nancy, Michael and Charles whom they raised on a small farm between Waukesha and Pewaukee. Betty was very creative when it came to arts and crafts, she helped with Brownies, Girl Scouts and 4-H projects. She loved gardening, canning and cooking. Her family and others enjoyed her many nice treats. Woodrow died in 1975; as a widow she traveled many places around the world from Norway to Jerusalem to Australia and New Zealand. She loved making up photo albums of her travels and tours of flower gardens to remember the good times and share with family and friends. When travels became difficult, she crocheted a lot of afghans and other smaller crafts to share with loved ones. She enjoyed watching cooking shows and trying new recipes.

She will be sadly missed by her children Jean (Herbert) Lehndorf of Black Creek, Michael (Lou Ann) Newman of Waukesha and Charles (Linda) Newman of Dousman. She is further survived by 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Although she no longer remembered names so well, Betty knew they were all family and loved by her. She will always be in our hearts and memories. She was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow on June 24, 1975, daughter Nancy Diermeier and sister Lillian (Franklin) Nader; granddaughter Heather Newman and a grandson, Allen Newman and other brother and sisters from the Elkhorn area.

Betty’s family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Legacy Assisted Living and Aseracare Hospice for their special care. She thrived because of your smiles, little waves and frequent hugs.
