Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Moerschel, 54, passed away peacefully on December 9th after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a selfless soul filled with kindness and love for her children and all those around her.
Betsy was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She attended Waukesha South High School and Mission Viejo High School in California, where she trained as a competitive swimmer. She was a 9-time high school All-American and qualified for the 1984 Olympic Trials. She then attended Northwestern University on a swimming scholarship and received a BA in Communications and Spanish, and an MA in Education. Betsy became a First Grade teacher at Sears School in Kenilworth, where she remained for seven years. She married Greg Moerschel, a fellow Wisconsin native and Northwestern graduate. Together they raised three cherished children - Eric, Andrew and Carley - through their most formative years.
Betsy was exceptionally generous and caring. She passionately supported the Kenilworth School District as a member of the School Board, New Trier High School Fine Arts, the Winnetka Public Library, the NASA Swim Club, Kenilworth Union Church, and Northwestern Athletics. She remained a master’s level swimmer. Betsy loved animals, particularly her two rescue dogs. She published a children’s book and donated sale proceeds to the public school in Linton, North Dakota, where Betsy enjoyed (too little) time on the family ranch. Throughout her adult life, Betsy gave her time, energy and attention to others before herself.
More than anything, Betsy will be remembered for her role as an extraordinary mother. She was entirely dedicated to the nurturing and success of her children. Swim meets, concerts, baseball games - Betsy attended them all. She was the foundation from which her children grew and thrived. Memories of her devotion and love will be cherished forever.
Betsy is survived by Eric, Andrew, Carley and Greg; two sisters (Jenny and Margi); two brothers (Mike and Nate); and her mother, Virginia.
