Jean H. Michaud, a Waukesha resident since 1959, died on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at her home at Avalon Square at the age of 80. She was born in London, Ontario, Canada on October 23, 1930 the daughter of Charles Sterling and Ariel May (nee Beverly) Mackenzie. After receiving her diploma as a register nurse from Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, Jean entered the United States for employment at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There she met her future husband, Ted C. Michaud, a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Michigan. On September 10, 1955 they were married in London, Ontario at the United Church of Canada. Jean became a citizen of the United States in June of 1966. Jean was the first nurse at the Avalon Manor, now Avalon Square, where she has resided since 2006. Following her employment at the Avalon, she was in charge of immunization clinics for the Waukesha County Health Department and later was the Employee Health Nurse at Waukesha Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukesha and an officer of the Parent Teachers Association at Hawthorne Elementary School. Jean had a lifelong interest in children and was a pediatric nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. During her earlier married years, the family spent summer vacations at the Mackenzie family cottage in Sarnia, Ontario where Jean often looked after the 14 grandchildren of her parents Charlie and Ariel (her nieces and nephews). When Carroll College had an influx of foreign exchange students, Jean took 19 year old, Vasilios Evrenoglou, from Greece under her wing. The Michaud Family traveled to Oregon in the early 1960’s where Jean looked after her three toddlers while Ted collected marine specimens under a National Science Foundation Grant. Jean loved traveling overseas to Europe in 1990 and often with family to conventions of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Society. She and Ted provided transportation to the Huntsville, Alabama Space Center Convention, to Erie, PA and New Orleans convention for several Carroll College students. She attended two BBB conventions in Puerto Rico, one in Colorado and the planning sessions for the San Diego and San Antonio conventions. Jean was always interested in sports. As a young girl she served as a goalie in hockey games with her three brothers. In high school she remembered playing tennis with the MD who reported on the early developments in heart transplant surgery on television later in life. She and Ted lived near the University of Michigan Stadium from 1955 to 1957 and attended most of the football games and during her early years at Carroll College went sledding with Vasilios Evrenoglou and her three children down the hill at South High School at night while Ted studied. Jean will be sorely missed by her husband, Dr. Ted Michaud, of Waukesha, her sons Michael (Gail) Michaud of Holland, MI and David (Amparo) Michaud of Philadelphia, PA, her daughter Susan (William) Lieven of Milwaukee. She was the proud grandmother of Spencer Michaud of Ann Arbor, MI, Amanda and Adriana Michaud of Massachusetts, Samantha and James Lieven of Milwaukee, and Kris Diehl of Caledonia, MI. She was the dear great-grandmother of Sofie Nepiuk and Evan William Diehl. Jean is further survived by her two brothers: Douglas and Stuart Mackenzie of Sarnia, Ontario. In addition, to her parents, her brother Beverly preceded her in death.
