Mary E. Patton, of Waukesha, died unexpectedly on Monday, February 10, 2014 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 77 years. She was born near Earlville, Iowa on April 24, 1936 the daughter of Harry and Ella (nee Baskerville) Gibbs. Mary graduated with her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Dubuque, then a master’s in English from the University of Iowa and a master’s in library science from UW-Milwaukee. On August 21, 1958 she married Rev. Dr. Roger D. Patton. Mary was an Ordained Deacon and Elder of the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waukesha where she was part of the Rebekah Circle. She also taught Sunday School for 43 years, and enjoyed singing in all the church choirs at churches her husband served. Mary taught English at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and retired after 19 years of being a librarian at South Milwaukee High School. For the past four years Mary and her husband Roger lived at Avalon Square where she enjoyed volunteering.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 55 years, Waukesha alderman, Rev. Dr. Roger D. Patton of Waukesha and their children, Rev. Lori Patton of Nashville, TN, Rachel Patton of Milwaukee and Benjamin Patton of Waukesha. She is further survived by her sisters, Virginia Von Talge of Manchester, Iowa, Lois Zollars of Pittsburgh, CA and Celia (Bruce) Keith of Lake Forest, Illinois along with special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 12:30 PM until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 810 N. East Avenue, Waukesha, WI 53186. Reverend Nicole Farley will preside. Private interment will be held at Vernon Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to First Presbyterian Church for new hymn books.
