Mary F. Shields, of Waukesha, died on Saturday, September 26, 2009 surrounded by family at LindenGrove Waukesha at the age of 85. She was born on July 20, 1924 in Milwaukee, the daughter of George and Lillian (Graef) Bowe. After attending St. Joseph Grade School and Waukesha High School, Mary graduated from Milwaukee Business School. From 1944 to 1946, she proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy as a member of the WAVES stationed in Washington D.C. She was united in marriage to Gene “Lefty” Shields on April 3, 1948; he preceded her in death on May 8, 2003. Mary was member of American Legion Post 8 in Waukesha, as well as a member of the WAVES National and the WAVES Wisconsin Badger Unit 39. As an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mary enjoyed being an usher, a Christian Mother, and a lunch lady for WCSS. Mary will be deeply missed by her children: Mike (Maureen) Shields of Pompano Beach, FL, Anne (Bob) Brzycki of New Berlin, and Patty (Steve) Houk of Waukesha; Ida Shields of Port St. Lucia, FL; Chuck Goetsch of Sussex; grandchildren: Tracy (Guy) Cypert of Waukesha, Tim (Johanna) Shields of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Amy (Jon) Majdoch of Dousman, Scot (Jaimie) Shields of Livonia, MI, Megan, Kevin, Katie and Michael Houk, all of Waukesha, and Katie Shields of Pompano Beach, FL; great-grandchildren: Payton, Brody, and Logan Cypert of Waukesha, Jordan and Morgan Majdoch of Dousman, Kayla and Ella Shields of Livonia, MI; and Trent, Ashley, and Brooke Shields of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She is also survived by her sister, Ellen (William) Schuster of Waukesha; her special friends Marilee and Jeanine; her special Up North Sundown Birthday Friends; and other relative and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Virginia and Joseph Betker. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 from 4:00 PM until the 6:00 PM Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 822 N. East Ave., Waukesha. Fr. Bill Key will preside. Burial will be held privately on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be donated to Mary’s favorite charities.
