Dr. Melvin H Leeder Dc

February 28, 1925 — October 15, 2014

Dr. Melvin H. Leeder, DC, of the town of Vernon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Angels Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc at the age of 89. He was born on February 28, 1925, in Waukesha, the son of Emil and Ida (Buth) Leeder. As a young man he worked hard as a restaurant cook. In school he enjoyed swimming and boxing. He graduated from Waukesha High School in 1943 and entered the army. He proudly served his country in the European Theater during World War II in the U.S. Army 1254th Engineers with various responsibilities. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After serving his country he returned to Waukesha and the restaurant called the Park Lunch.
On June 25, 1949 he married Betty Jean Boston at the Evangelical and Reformed UCC in Waukesha and they were blessed with 65 years together.
He then attended college and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1954 from the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois. In 1955 Melvin opened his own chiropractic office in Waukesha. He had a heart of gold and helped many enjoy improved health through his loving care at the office on Wisconsin Avenue and with the many house calls he made to people that could not travel. He was named Chiropractor of the Year by the Society of Wisconsin Chiropractors in 1959. He retired at age 77 from his chiropractic service in 2003.
Mel lived with Betty on a 3 acre farmette in the Town of Vernon where in his free time he enjoyed gardening and raising chickens, ducks, and pheasants. He shared these organic raised delicacies with others, long before organic became popular.
He also enjoyed weekends at the family cottage on Mayflower Lake near Birnamwood where he was an avid swimmer and fisherman. In the fall he enjoyed being out in the woods grouse and deer hunting with family and friends. He will be missed, but not forgotten, by the family and the neighborhood hunting group, especially at story hour.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Betty Jean of the town of Vernon, along with their two sons David (Julie) Leeder of the town of Freedom and Daniel (Julie) Leeder of Dothan, Alabama. He is the dear grandfather of Joshua (Mindy) Leeder, Matthew Leeder, Nathan (Tara) Leeder and Amanda Leeder and step-grandfather of Tiffany Goodwin, Jacob Brown, Justin Brown, Kayla Stewart and Julia Stewart. He is further survived by 2 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, the Liskowitz Family, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters Arvilla Howell and Mildred Zimdars.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at AngelsGrace Hospice for the excellent care provided to Dr. Leeder in his last days.
