Meredith "Penny" E. Van Horn

August 10, 1940 — December 23, 2015

Meredith “Penny” Van Horn of Delafield died Wednesday, December 23, 2015, following a long battle against heart disease at age 75. She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on August 10, 1940, the daughter of Claude and Elsabeth (Beining) Grant. On January 2, 1960 she married Pete Van Horn in Milton, WI. While Penny was at Milton College, she was a member of Theta Theta Theta sorority and later joined Beta Sigma Phi. She also worked in the UW-Madison Endocrinology Lab, where she earned her “PHT” degree (“Putting Husband Through School” degree) while Pete was in Engineering school. She loved worshiping and learning at Hartland First Baptist Church. Penny was a former president of Woman’s Club of Pewaukee, where she was also treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Pewaukee Yacht Club Main Stays and Pewaukee Service Club. Penny was a former member of Zion Presbyterian Church and served as Moderator for the Kettle Moraine Parish. She delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered in the health room at Butler Middle School. Penny loved to read, participating in two book clubs, and she enjoyed traveling, golfing, bowling, and playing bridge with friends. Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, caring deeply for her entire family.

Penny will be sadly missed by her beloved husband Peter, and their children Mark (Lora) of Springfield, MO, Brian (Karen) of Durham, NC, and Mary (Randy) Peterson of Pewaukee. She will also be missed by her grandchildren David (Erin) Schuster, Courtney Van Horn, Stephen Schuster, Esther (Josh) Clark, Olivia, Naomi and Meg Van Horn. She is further survived by her brothers Bob, Claude and John Grant, sister Jane Derington, and her sister-in-law Sandy Grant. In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her brothers Jim and Rick, and her sister Joyce.

Visitation will be held on January 9 from 12:00-1:45, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 at Hartland First Baptist Church, 780 Tenny Ave, Hartland, WI 53029. Penny donated her body to the Medical College of Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the church debt retirement fund or to the Meredith E (Penny) Van Horn memorial fund at the Waukesha State Bank intended for construction of a bridge over the Pewaukee River in her memory.
