Shirley Brown

May 28, 1923 — February 24, 2012

Shirley May Brown, of Waukesha, died on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Avalon Square at the age of 88.  She was the oldest of seven children born on May 28, 1923 growing up in Roanoke, Virginia.  Her pioneer spirit began with her first job as the first female in cost accounting during WWII for American Viscose rayon plant.  At eighty, she retired from the Washington D.C. Patent Office where was a librarian and computer research instructor.  She was an adventurous type who never lost interest in learning and enjoyed traveling throughout the world.  An avid reader, she was a member of the American Library Association and served as a trustee of the Waukesha Public Library board for thirteen years.  She adhered to a healthy lifestyle throughout her life and was a member and committee secretary for the YWCA for several years.  She was active in the League of Women Voters and also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi.  She was artistic, played the piano and studied genealogy.    Surviving are her daughters Alice of Waukesha, Clara of Thiensville, Barbara of Ames, IA, son Robert of Madison, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.  A private family memorial service will be held.  Donations to the Fitness Center of Avalon Square, 222 Park Place, Waukesha, WI 53186 would be appreciated.  Please visit www.waukeshafunerals.com to leave the family an online tribute message.
