William J. “Bill” Volckmann, O.D., of Waukesha, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, June 29, 2012 at his home at the age of 86. He was born in South Milwaukee on March 12, 1926 the only child of William G. and Cecelia Marie (nee Klaiser) Volckmann. He proudly served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Guam as the Communications Officer. Dr. Volckmann attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, where he graduated with honors in 1949. On February 16, 1952 he married the former Lois Moore in Waukegan, IL. In 1959 he and his family moved to Waukesha to start his own practice as an optometrist. He had an office in Estberg’s Jewelry Store until he went into optometric partnership with Al Walke on Grand Ave. In 1978 Dr. Volckmann opened his own optometric practice in Waukesha on Sunset Drive. Sunset Vision Center became a family business with Dr. Volckmann and his wife Lois, working side by side. They served the Waukesha community until 1996 when Dr. Volckmann and Lois retired. He was a member of the Waukesha Noon Lions Club for 56 years, where he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and a member of the Lions Eye Bank. Dr. Volckmann was President of the Board of Directors for Headstart from 1970-2010. He was a longtime member of the Waukesha Bible Church where he taught sunday school, was head usher, treasurer and chairman of the Mission Committee. Dr. Volckmann served in Awana for many years and went on five different mission trips. Other memberships include the Waukesha Town Board of Appeals and the Southside Business Council. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 60 years Lois, their children: Marie Hill Volckmann of Muskego, Paul (Jan) Volckmann of South Milwaukee, Patti (Peter) Larson of Delafield and Mark (Jill) Volckmann of Waukesha, his eight grandchildren: Jayson Hyman, Rachel (Charlie Nelson) Hyman, Natalie (Matt) Racine, William “Bill” Volckmann, Jr. Clayton Volckmann, MacKenzie Volckmann, Heather (Jimmy) Litkenhus and Haley (Zach) Sublett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son William Michael Volckmann. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 4:00PM until the 7:00 PM funeral service at Waukesha Bible Church S53 W24079 Glendale Road, Waukesha. Private family graveside services with full military honors will be held on Friday July 6, 2012 at Prairie Home Cemetery.
